Penton Wins Veterans National Sabre Title:
Rob Penton of NLSC won the Veterans National Sabre Title in Gloucester. Rob was ranked
second after the poules and drew occasional NLSC fencer Kevin Alexander in the first
round of the Direct Elimination. A straight forward 10-3 victory was followed up
with another win by the same score over Watford’s Tony Bardell. Rob’s faced Scimitar’s
Barry Coulter in the last 8 opponent in a repeat of the Commonwealth Championship
semi-final which Rob had won 10-9 in a nervy encounter. This time though things were
much more straight forward as Rob was able to pick Barry off on preparation repeatedly
to close out a 10-5 victory.
The semi-finals saw Stephen Moore face former Champion Duncan Rowlands of Lazlo’s
Fencing and Seacourt’s Carl Morris met Rob Penton. Rowlands overcame Moore in a surprisingly
comfortable 10-6 victory. In the second semi-final, a very focused Rob Penton demonstrated
a strong variety of strokes to open up a 5-0 score at the break before closing the
fight out 10-2.
The first period of the final was a rather nervy affair with the lead changing throughout
before Rowlands took the final hit for a 5-4 lead at the break. In the second half
Rob clearly settled and took control of the fight as his opponent was forced to take
increasing risks running out a comfortable 10-6 winner.
